9-11 Songs

September 11, 2001 is the date that terrorists hijacked airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon near Washington DC.

These are the songs, CDs, etc., suggested for commemorating the anniversary
of September 11, 2001. Many thanks to all who responded, and please forgive
me if I've left your suggestion off the list!

The Mollys: a song based on a newspaper account of workers in a World Trade

harm's way until they decided to: "Put the baby in the shopping cart and
run."  "Put the Baby in the Shopping Cart" on the Mollys' latest release,

Kimmie Rhodes feels that she wrote "Darkness Lifting" as a premonition of
9/11, just a couple of days before it happened in fact. Also "Witness to the
Crime" ?
Sandy Ross: September 11th (single) [sandyross@mindspring.com]
Danny Schmidt: Already Done & Tick Tock (Six Billion Stars)

Richard Thompson: How Will I Ever Be Simple Again
Loudon Wainwright has one about riding the subway under Ground Zero -- not

Hank Williams, Jr.: America Will Survive
Neil Young: Let's Roll
If you want to freak out your audience you could always play the horrific
"God Bless the USA" by the evil and cynical Lee Greenwood. It's even worse
than Hank Jr.'s.

You might go to the folkdj-l archive (I forget the URL, but you can link
there from folkradio.org) and browse through the playlists from the week or
two following 9/11/01

CDs:
"Tears of A Thousand Years"
"Vigil"
there was the Winter Sing Out! issue in which all songs were about 9/11

Heroes

Eric Bogle: Our National Pride (Endangered Species), Greentrax 196 (about
firemen and women in Australia)
Angela Marseglia: "Gonna Rain Today"  She wrote this song in memory of the
five Worcester firefighters who perished December 1999.  It's on her "Days
Gone By" http://www.folkzone.com/AndreaMarseglia/welcome.htm

Hope
Eva Cassidy: Imagine
Aoifa Clancy: There Is Hope
Paul Kamm and Eleanor McDonald: "Calling on Love"
Joel Mabus: In the category of hope and seeing the big picture, "Sea Of
Dreams" from PROMISED LAND
Rob MacKillop: title cut "The Healing", (Greentrax)
Paul Simon: "American Tune" might be appropriate.
One respondant: "I've always found Dar Williams's Mortal City inspirational,
the idea of people in a big heartless city coming together to help each other
out for love."

Appleseed: "Songs by Category" page on our website pressroom <
www.appleseedrec.com/pressroom/songs/> The category for "Heroes, Martyrs &
Outlaws" lists specific people, none related to 9/11, but the category for
"Optimism, Self-Determination & Defiance" has some great suggestions.
