On October 12, 1492, a sailor on the Pinta first sighted land in the New World. Columbus Day is now celebrated on the second Monday in October. It is also a day to celebrate Italian-Americans. Nowadays, awareness of Columbus' harsh treatment of the Indians has tempered enthusiasm for this holiday.
