While preparing to catch up on posting play lists, I was reminded that a few
weeks back I requested help in finding songs having to do with Tuesday and
promised to post the results. (At the time I was assembling a show featuring
music about days of the week, and I will post the play list for that show in
a separate message.)
The response to the "Tuesday song" request was overwhelming, both on and off
list. By far, the most popular suggestion was Dick Gaughan's recording of
"Ruby Tuesday" on his CD SAIL ON. Unfortunately, we did not have the CD in
our library at the time but have since secured a copy, thanks to Alan
Edwards at Appleseed Records.
With apologies in advance to those who might have offered duplicate
suggestions, I will try to paste below all of the other "Tuesday songs" that
were recommended.
Eric Bogle- "It's Only Tuesday" on Voices in the Wilderness;
Cowboy Junkies- "Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning" on The Caution
Horses.--Mike Regenstreif
Patty Larkin does an acoustic version of Ruby Tuesday. . . I think it is on
a compilation though. . . And, there is that old Moody Blues song: Tuesday
Afternoon. (nice piano part).--Jere Stormer
Beth & April Stevens, "Tuesday's Gone," on their Little By Little CD
(Rounder, 2002).--Jon Weisberger
Cat Stevens - Tuesday's Dead - Teaser And The Firecat (A&M)--john Barrington
Jones
Eliza Carthy has a song called "Tuesday Morning" on her CDs, "Rice" and
"Pluckin' Hammered". Denny Doherty covers a tune by the same name (but with
him listed as writing credits, not "trad") on his 71 album, "Watcha' Gonna
Do?" The Armstrong Family does a song called "Fat Tuesday", with composer
listed as Trad, on their "Wheel of the Year: Thirty Years with the Armstrong
Family", from 92. And Tommy Malone does one by the same name that he wrote,
on his "Soul Heavy" CD from 2001. And for something bluegrassy and swinging
and jazzy, you might consider "Tuesday at 7:30", performed by the
Anger/Marshall Band (Darell Anger & Mike Marshall, on violin and mando
respectively), from their 2000 CD, "Brand New Can". If you wanted an
acoustic version of "Ruby Tuesday", you could try Melanie's, which I seem to
recall as being pretty unelectrified. The Pozo Seco Singers, where Don
Williams sang before he was a country star, had it on their album, too; I
still have that in the basement on vinyl, but I'm not entirely sure where
you'd find it these days.--Susanne Millsaps
I have a track on my 1993 CD, "Take Your Time" which I called "Cove
Tuesday".--Ben Sands
Minnesota guitarist John McKone has a solo acoustic guitar piece titled
"Tuesday Last" on his CD called "Times Too."--Otto Bost
There was a late 60s or early 70s lp called Laramie that had a faux hi-speed
bluegrass Ruby Tuesday, along the lines of Run C&W. Naturally, I used to
play it quite a bit.--Taylor Caffery
Sally Fingerett - The Red Man
Dave Van Ronk - Where Were You Last Night
The Pogues - Tuesday Morning--Harlon Joye
Call It Stormy Mon. (But Tues's just as bad) Jimmy Witherspoon -- JW & Jr.
Mance
Ruby Tuesday -- Deana Carter -- Stone Country--Mike Flynn
Bobbie Gentry: Hurry, Tuesday Child--Rich Warren
Tuesday Blues / Stephen Bennett / No Net / Cimirron:Rainbird
Mardi March / Orville Johnson / Slide & Joy! / Johnson
Mardi Gras __?__ / Balfa Brothers or Beausoleil or other Cajun/Zydeco group
(Forgotten an exact title - but you get the general idea)--Suzi Wollenberg
The response was amazing. As I said earlier, thanks also to those who
recommended duplicate titles. I actually ended up using the Steven
Sisters--partly because I had a copy, and partly because it is closer to the
style of music we generally play.
Thanks again.
