Downtown Olympia is a fun and interesting "low rent" area with good pubs, funky cafes, folk music and unusual shops. I like it a lot. Easy to walk to from the marina, too, if you arrive by boat.

  A nice place to eat dinner, in an old hotel. They have lots of veggie entrees.
• Traditions Cafe, 300 5th Avenue SW, 360-705-2819.
  A modest little cafe, connected to a crafts import store. They have folk music here many nights of the week.
• Matrix Coffee House (Chehalis), 434 NW Prindle Street, Chehalis, 360/740-0492.
  Chehalis is about a half-hour drive south of Olympia. If you're looking for vegetarian food and folk music, and maybe a nice guitar, this is the place.
