Northwest Folk Music Concert Calendar (Seattle and Eastside)
by Richard Gillmann

Richard Gillmann at the SUPA picnic in 2015

Indoor folk music concerts in Seattle and nearby areas. There are also outdoor festivals during the warmer months, notably the Folklife festival over Memorial Day weekend.

I was a host of the "Lunch With Folks" and "The Outskirts" shows on KBCS radio for 16 years. I also compiled a top folk airplay chart from 1997 to 2017. The chart continues under the auspices of Folk Alliance at folkradio.org. Just to keep my hand in at software development (I'm retired), I decided to write a Python/BeautifulSoup program for a local folk music calendar. This calendar is scraped from the websites of local presenters and venues.

Presenters: Bushwick, Crocodile, Fremont Abbey, Maritime Folknet, PNWF, SFS, STG, Showbox, SiS
Venues: Anderson School, Benaroya, Black Dog, C&P, Conor Byrne, Couth Buzzard, Crossroads, Egan's, Frankie's, Jazz Alley, KPCenter, Kent Arts, Magic Flavors, Pacific Room, Perihelion, Royal, Soulfood, TangleTown, Thumbnail, Town Hall, Tractor, Triple Door, Vito's
House Concerts: Frontier, Our House

 Casey MacGill

Casey MacGill

Casey MacGill croons classic tunes in a style encompassing blues, ballads, and boogie. His piano weaves a spell of smoke-filled joints where little dramas played out to the sounds of tinkling keys. Casey is a native of Los Angeles and grew up with folk music, surf, 60's pop, and eventually the blues. He attended the Monterey Pop Festival, saw icons Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, blues artists Paul Butterfield, Junior Wells, Albert King, and the blues became the cornerstone of his musical style. He majored in music at Pasadena City College and Cal State LA, studying with jazz greats Gary Foster, Warne Marsh, and Buddy Collette. ...

 Robert Sarazin Blake

Robert Sarazin Blake

Robert Sarazin Blake In 1997, Robert Sarazin Blake dropped out of college and hit the road. The folk music of his father’s house had combined with the DIY punk ethos of the day and produced his first batch of songs, Another Irrelevant Year. Eleven full length albums into his career, he’s continued to write pulling from folk roots, his travels, his contemporaries, and the quiet spot in the back of his mind. The writing has evolved, mellowing with experience and expanding with reference, but the essence of the work has remained the same-strong narratives solidly built on the folk foundation and fully in the immediacy of the now. ...

Dan Bern w/ Rebecca Rego *partially seated*

With the release of his 1997 self-titled debut, Iowa native Dan Bern became the latest, following the likes of John Prine, Elliott Murphy, Steve Forbert, Loudon Wainwright III, and numerous others, to wear the "new Dylan" mantle. With an acoustic guitar, a batch of sharp, witty, insightful songs, and a delivery reminiscent of the man himself, Bern left his home in the Midwest for L.A., where he assaulted the local folk scene. He subsequently made his way to various clubs and festivals nationwide, where he garnered a great deal of notice and eventually caught the attention of Sony Records' Work Group subsidiary, with whom he inked a deal. ...

 Eilen Jewell w/ guests

Eilen Jewell w/ guests

Eilen Jewell laughs when told her label’s president called her a musicologist. But she confirms she and her husband and bandmate, Jason Beek, have a passion for studying American music. “We really love to uncover the past. It’s almost like digging for buried treasure,” she says. “For me, that’s where music is at. I like all kinds of music as long as there’s the word early in front of it.” For her new album, Down Hearted Blues, releasing Sept. 22, 2017, on Signature Sounds, they unearthed 12 vintage gems written or made famous by an array of artists both renowned and obscure, from Willie Dixon and Memphis Minnie to Charles Sheffield and Betty James. ...

Carsie Blanton w/ guests *partially seated*

Buck Up, the new studio album from singer and songwriter Carsie Blanton, due out February 15 2019, opens with a siren. The warning – or call to (dis)arms – segues into the first notes of “Twister.” Finger snaps alone accompany Blanton’s smoky vocals, before piano, upright bass, cello, trumpet, and drums join the proceedings. You’re immediately drawn in to her riveting tale of natural – and erotic – disaster. Brimming with catchy hooks, sensual vocals, and lyrics boasting a gift for rhyme and meter, Buck Up is Blanton’s melodic mandate for survival following the 2016 presidential election: passion, lust, and humor. ...

 Reuben and the Dark

Reuben and the Dark

un | love, the new album by Reuben and the Dark, is a collection of lush and beautiful songs about endings and hope for the future. Chronicling a tempestuous time in frontman Reuben Bullock's life, the album's eleven songs represent an exploration of life's crossroads, and the personal growth that comes from it. On the band's third album, Reuben and the Dark evokes the raw emotion of Bullock's soulful vocals with spacious sonics that suggest the levity that comes with the passage of a storm. un | love was produced by the band and Marcus Paquin (The National, Timber Timbre, Local Natives), who also takes up the mixing chair, as well as Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene.

The Wood Brothers

Dubbed “masters of soulful folk” by Paste, The Wood Brothers formed after brothers Chris and Oliver Wood pursued separate musical careers for 15 years. With drummer Jano Rix added as a permanent third member, it’s become quite clear that The Wood Brothers is indeed the main act. Their 6th album, ‘One Drop of Truth’ is undeniably The Wood Brothers’ most dynamic recording to date and was recognized as such…

Steve James

Singer, instrumentalist, songsmith, storyteller and keeper of the eternal backbeat, Steve James is recently resident in Seattle after years as an “underground legend” in Texas and on the road that has taken him from Bleecker Street to Beale Street and to just about every continent except Antarctica and Nebraska. His musical colleagues have described him as follows: “He has a rare gift for using traditional forms with complete naturalness…It’s a hell of a show!” Elijah Wald “Quite simply, he’s one of the best I know.” Jorma Kaukonen “Made me wish Blind Blake were still alive so the two of them could sit down to a cutting contest.” Ed Ward.

 Claudia Schmidt

Claudia Schmidt

If you listened to the Prairie Home Companion show in the late ’70s and early ’80s you certainly knew Claudia Schmidt, one of Garrison Keillor’s regular performers. She was ubiquitous, a folk, jazz and blues singer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist – she plays guitar, mountain dulcimer, and quirky instruments such as the pianola. Claudia Schmidt has been perfecting her craft of performing for almost four decades. It is a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge (her word!) of music, poetry, story, laughter. ...
