Northwest Folk Music Concert Calendar (Seattle and Eastside)
by Richard Gillmann

Richard Gillmann at the SUPA picnic in 2015

Indoor folk music concerts in Seattle and nearby areas. There are also outdoor festivals during the warmer months, notably the Folklife festival over Memorial Day weekend.

I was a host of the "Lunch With Folks" and "The Outskirts" shows on KBCS radio for 16 years. I also compiled a top folk airplay chart from 1997 to 2017. The chart continues under the auspices of Folk Alliance at folkradio.org. Just to keep my hand in at software development (I'm retired), I decided to write a Python/BeautifulSoup program for a local folk music calendar. This calendar is scraped from the websites of local presenters and venues.

Presenters: Bushwick, Crocodile, Fremont Abbey, Live Music, PNWF, SFS, STG, SiS
Venues: Anderson School, Ballard Homestead, Benaroya, Black Dog, C&P, Conor Byrne, Couth Buzzard, Crocodile, Crossroads, East Shore, Egan's, Frankie's, Fremont Abbey, Grumpy D's, Hugo House, KPCenter, Kenyon, Neptune, North City, Olive Way Starbucks, Pegasus, Perihelion, Phinney, Pink Door, Rendezvous, SoulFood, Sunset, The Dane, The Den, Thumbnail, Town Hall, Tractor, Treehouse, Triple Door, Vincent, Vincert School House, Vito's

Winter weather got you feeling down? Stop by Pegasus and get your groove on to these fine local blues musicians. Briar is a singer of vintage jazz, blues and original music. By blending a powerful voice with stories about the history and origins of her music, she shines a light on singers and tales that have been forgotten by the country that created them. Casey MacGill croons classic tunes in a style encompassing blues, ballads, and boogie. His piano weaves a spell of smoke-filled joints where little dramas played out to the sounds of tinkling keys. Casey is a native of Los Angeles and grew up with folk music, surf, 60's pop, and eventually the blues. He attended the Monterey Pop Festival, saw icons Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, blues artists Paul Butterfield, Junior Wells, Albert King, and the blues became the cornerstone of his musical style. Bryan Bowers

Bryan Bowers has become a major artist on the traditional music circuit. He has redefined the autoharp and is also well known as a singer-songwriter. Bryan has a dynamic outgoing personality and an uncanny ability to enchant a crowd in practically any situation. His towering six foot four inch frame can be wild and zany on stage while playing a song like `Dixie’ and five minutes later he can have the same audience singing `Will The Circle Be Unbroken’ in quiet reverence and delight. For nearly three decades, Bryan Bowers has been to the autoharp what Earl Scruggs was to the five-string banjo. ...

William Pint and Felicia Dale – Music and Myth of the Sea

William Pint and Felicia Dale – Music and Myth of the Sea

The music of the sea -- maritime music, nautical music. Whether they be contemporary songs with the sea as a theme, ancient ballads of fearsome pirates, or shanties, (or ‘chanties’, if you prefer) the traditional work songs sung aboard the tall ships to organize the labor of the crew enabling small groups of men to accomplish tremendous feats of strength. Those crews were English, Irish, Welsh, German, French, from the West Indies, The United States and other sea going nations, but the…

91.3 KBCS Presents: Tall Heights w/ Victoria Canal

Recorded at Color Study studio in Goshen, Vermont, Holding On, Holding Out was partially inspired by the music that poured out of Tall Heights’ car speakers during the long drives from show to show. The guys found themselves listening to a wide array of sounds as they hurtled across the country, but they zeroed in on Icelandic music, taking influence from the sonic sweep of Sigur R&ocute;s and the electronic percussion of Ásgeir. The music of Iceland’s underground was deep, dark and cinematic, able not only to deliver a melody, but to cast a mood, too. ...

Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas

" … you would think they'd been playing together for centuries. While his fiddle dances, her cello throbs darkly or pluckspuckishly. Then [Haas] opens her cello's throat, joining Fraser in soaring sustains, windswept refrains, and sudden, jazzy explosions. Their sound is as urbane as a Manhattan midnight, and as wild as a Clackmannan winter."— Boston GlobeThe musical partnership between consummate performer Alasdair Fraser, "the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling," and brilliant Californian cellist, Natalie Haas, spans the full spectrum between intimate chamber music and ecstatic dance energy. ...

Soulsha - Afro-Celtic Funk

Soulsha is a party, a revolution, and an adventure through different traditions. It brings together some of Boston’s top musicians in Scottish, West African, and funk music to create a sound you won’t find anywhere else on the planet.  Soulful call and response singing, masterful improvisation, traditional Senegalese and Scottish dancing and incredible energy make every show an unforgettable live experience. Intricate rhythms, soaring bagpipe melodies, and New Orleans-infused horn lines come together seamlessly, and the joy of music rises above all differences, reminding us that we’re all in this together.

Iris Dement w/ Ana Egge

It was by pure chance that Iris DeMent opened the book of Russian poetry sitting on her piano bench to Anna Akhmatova's "Like A White Stone." She'd never heard of the poet before, and didn't even consider herself much of a poetry buff, but a friend had leant her the anthology and it only seemed polite that she skim it enough to have something interesting to say when she returned it. As she read, though, a curious sensation swept over her."I didn't feel like I was alone anymore," remembers DeMent. ...

Reuben Bullock standing next to a body of water, wearing an orange scarf and holding daisies.

Reuben and the Dark

un | love, the new album by Reuben and the Dark, is a collection of lush and beautiful songs about endings and hope for the future. Chronicling a tempestuous time in frontman Reuben Bullock's life, the album's eleven songs represent an exploration of life's crossroads, and the personal growth that comes from it. On the band's third album, Reuben and the Dark evokes the raw emotion of Bullock's soulful vocals with spacious sonics that suggest the levity that comes with the passage of a storm. un | love was produced by the band and Marcus Paquin (The National, Timber Timbre, Local Natives), who also takes up the mixing chair, as well as Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene.

*This show is partially seated.  Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.* For more than three decades now, Robin & Linda Williams have made it their mission to perform the music that they love, “a robust blend of bluegrass, folk, old-time and acoustic country that combines wryly observant lyrics with a wide-ranging melodicism.” Today some might call it “Americana,” but these two revered music masters were living and breathing this elixir 20 years before that label was turned into a radio format.
