Richard Gillmann's
Northwest Folk Music Concert Calendar

Richard Gillmann at the SUPA picnic in 2015

Indoor folk music concerts in Seattle and nearby areas. There are also outdoor festivals during the warmer months, notably the Folklife festival over Memorial Day weekend.

I was a host of the "Lunch With Folks" and "The Outskirts" shows on KBCS radio for 16 years. I also compiled a top folk airplay chart from 1997 to 2017. The chart continues under the auspices of Folk Alliance at folkradio.org. Just to keep my hand in at software development (I'm retired), I decided to write a Python/BeautifulSoup program for a local folk music calendar. This calendar is scraped from the websites of local presenters and venues.

Presenters: Bushwick, Fremont Abbey, Maritime Folknet, PNWF, SFS, SiS
Venues: Black Dog, C&P, Couth Buzzard, Crossroads, Edmonds Arts, Jazz Alley, Jewelbox, KPCenter, Kent Arts, Kenyon, McMenamins Anderson, North City, Perihelion, Soulfood, Thumbnail, Town Hall, Tractor, Triple Door, Vino Bella, Vito's

 The Winterlings

The Winterlings

The Winterlings formed in Corvallis in 2007. Since then, they've released 4 albums, made the CMJ, AMA, and RMR radio charts as well as Top 30 charts at stations across the country, toured the US, Canada, and Mexico, and have garnered great reviews from nationally recognized roots music publications such as PASTE and No Depression. Their iconic song "Jennie Hodgers," which tells the true story of an Irish immigrant woman who dressed as a man to sneak into the Union Army and fight in the Civil War, was recently featured in a documentary about this extraordinary historical figure. Now based in Seattle, The Winterlings released their third album, You Are Acres, in January 2016 with a sold out show at Seattle's great listening room, Fremont Abbey Arts Center. Shortly after touring from Alaska to Los Angeles, The Winterlings stunned fans by releasing their fourth album, Poems That Live As People, in November 2016. The album reached #21 on the Alternative Folk Chart. With new classics like "Be Kind to the Housefly" and "Crawlspace," The Winterlings continue to surprise and inspire audiences worldwide."They're more than simply superb; they're absolutely spellbinding. Poems That Live As People feels like a milestone, one that sets this duo apart and establishes their spectacular, singular sound. There's no denying the immediately infectious approach that underscores practically every one of the ten tracks found here." -No Depression

 The Tarantellas

The Tarantellas

In a salute to Vito's Italian heritage, we are proud to present The Tarantellas as our dinner show on the first and third Saturdays of each month for a festive and loving tribute to "The Legendary Favorite Songs of Italy." Bandleader/vocalist Richard Sclafani holds forth with his antique Neapolitan mandolin, a little work of art in itself, with a unique sound that has been described as the "heart and soul of Southern Italy". On various nights, he is accompanied by special guests, including accordion virtuoso Bonnie Birch, acoustic guitarist Juan "Giovanni" Barco, and harmony vocalist Lana Brown. Romantic Italian love songs, classical waltzes, haunting Sicilian melodies, and wild Tarantella dances are all part of the authentic mix. Plus, The Tarantellas add their unique touch to many Italian-American favorites by Dean Martin, Al Martino, Julias LaRosa, Jerry Vale, and other great crooners of the '50s and '60s!

Hutchison, and Dirk Powell.  Rounding out the song list are a Washboard Sam blues turned bluegrass (Diggin’ My Potatoes), traditional pieces learned from  Kevin Burke and Jeff Davis, and a Woody Guthrie standard, (Pastures of Plenty).    While Tim has walked many musical paths in his career -- from singer songwriter and honky-tonk crooner to Celtic troubadour and old time cultivator - he takes a couple steps into the bluegrass mainstream here.    “Our lineup is classic bluegrass, but these folks play in any style you want, so we can reach pretty deep in my song bag when it’s called for.”   O’Brien adds that each band member brings their own personality.   “Patrick is a world class five string expert who also channels some Clarence White  sounds when he picks up a guitar.  Bub is an old standby and has played with me off and on over the past twenty years.  Jan and I used to just sing around the house, but now she’s on the recordings and on stage and makes us look better too.  Shad is a fiddle hero with his own expressive style and I love playing second fiddle with him now and then.”  Known in bluegrass circles for his mandolin playing, Tim concentrates on guitar in this setting saying, “It’s been really fun because I started in bluegrass as a guitar player 45 years ago, and now I try to ape my early heroes like Lester Flatt and Larry Sparks.”

Dan Bern w/ Rebecca Rego *partially seated*

Dan Bern w/ Rebecca Rego *partially seated*

With the release of his 1997 self-titled debut, Iowa native Dan Bern became the latest, following the likes of John Prine, Elliott Murphy, Steve Forbert, Loudon Wainwright III, and numerous others, to wear the "new Dylan" mantle. With an acoustic guitar, a batch of sharp, witty, insightful songs, and a delivery reminiscent of the man himself, Bern left his home in the Midwest for L.A., where he assaulted the local folk scene. He subsequently made his way to various clubs and festivals nationwide, where he garnered a great deal of notice and eventually caught the attention of Sony Records' Work Group subsidiary, with whom he inked a deal. Later in 1997, Work made available Dog Boy Van, his excellent 1996 indie release that was recorded prior to his signing with the label. The proper follow-up to Dan Bern, Fifty Eggs (produced by Ani DiFranco), was issued in March 1998 while the independent two-CD set Smartie Mine came out later the same year. No longer a resident of the Midwest, Bern settled in New Mexico in early 2002. Fleeting Days appeared the next spring. In 2004, Bern released the politically charged EP My Country II. It was followed in 2006 by the full-length Breathe. ~ Brett Hartenbach

The program will feature lush harmonies and strident dissonance, dance tunes and mournful ballads. Some songs are hundreds of years old and have been passed on through oral tradition, while others are recent compositions in the unique style of specific regions. Bryan has a dynamic outgoing personality and an uncanny ability to enchant a crowd in practically any situation. Good Lovelies

 Claudia Schmidt

Claudia Schmidt

If you listened to the Prairie Home Companion show in the late ’70s and early ’80s you certainly knew Claudia Schmidt, one of Garrison Keillor’s regular performers. She was ubiquitous, a folk, jazz and blues singer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist – she plays guitar, mountain dulcimer, and quirky instruments such as the pianola. Claudia Schmidt has been perfecting her craft of performing for almost four decades. It is a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge (her word!) of music, poetry, story, laughter. drama, and celebrating the moment. She has always included her original work along with very personal versions of the work of others, what you get is a unique look at the world from someone who says what she sees with clarity, humor, and wonder. Garrison Keillor said “when Claudia sings a song, it stays sung.” Listen to her music.
