Northwest Folk Music Concert Calendar
(Seattle and Eastside)
by Richard Gillmann

January 12, 2025

Folk music concerts in Seattle and nearby areas. The information is gathered from the public online calendars of venues.

I am the host of "The Real Folk" on 91.3fm KBCS or streaming at KBCS.FM. The show airs every Sunday 6-8pm. You can listen to archived shows for up to two weeks after air date (also MixCloud).

This calendar is scraped from the websites of local presenters and venues. Some venues don't have online calendars, or have ones that are too difficult to scrape. I include as many as I can. Comments?

The Tune Tourists – WB Reid, Bonnie Zahnow and Ruthie Dornfeld – are Seattle musicians who love to travel and have picked up fiddle tunes and songs from all around the Americas and Europe. From a French waltz to a Danish hopsa, Quebecois reels to old-time southern hoedowns, Cajun 2-steps, and dance tunes from Michoacán, You’ll hear some top notch twin fiddling and fine guitar and banjo accompaniment, along with vocals by WB and Bonnie from the Western swing, Cajun, Mexican and blues traditions. WB and Bonnie have performed as a duo for many years, and fiddler Ruthie Dornfeld has more recently joined them.

Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light

Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light

Fresh off a first place win at the 2023 Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival band competition, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light have been captivating audiences throughout the northeast. With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice, Sumner's lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle) and Mike Siegel (upright bass). Sumner is no stranger to the stage. She spent her early career on the bluegrass circuit, singing and writing with the genre-bending roots group Twisted Pine. Since setting out on her own, Sumner's songs have been critically acclaimed: winning the 2021 John Lennon Award in the folk category for her song "Radium Girls (Curie Eleison);" earning a spot in the Kerrville New Folk Competition; and being chosen four consecutive years as one of the top Massachusetts entries in NPR’s Tiny Desk Competition.

Scott Cook & Pamela Mae

In 2007, Albertan songwriter Scott Cook quit his job teaching kindergarten in Taiwan and moved into a minivan. He’s made his living as a troubadour ever since, touring almost incessantly across Canada, the US, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere, averaging 120 shows and a dozen summer festivals a year, and releasing seven albums of plainspoken, keenly observant verse along the way. His 2020 collection Tangle of Souls came packaged in a cloth-bound, 240-page hardcover book of road stories and politico-philosophical musings. The album spent two weeks at #1 on Alberta’s province-wide community radio network CKUA, and earned Scott his third Canadian Folk Music Award nomination, for English Songwriter of the Year...

For the past three decades, her music has regularly topped the folk radio charts as she has performed at coffeehouses, festivals, and concerts in every corner of the US. As The Chicago Examiner notes in writing about Sheridan: “You can’t…continue touring for twenty or so years, unless you know what you’re doing, and do it well.”
