Northwest Folk Music Concert Calendar (Seattle and Eastside)

Richard Gillmann at the SUPA picnic in 2015

Indoor folk music concerts in Seattle and nearby areas. There are also outdoor festivals during the warmer months, notably the Folklife festival over Memorial Day weekend.

I was a host of the "Lunch With Folks" and "The Outskirts" shows on KBCS radio for 16 years. I also compiled a top folk airplay chart from 1997 to 2017. The chart continues under the auspices of Folk Alliance at folkradio.org. Just to keep my hand in at software development (I'm retired), I decided to write a Python/BeautifulSoup program for a local folk music calendar. This calendar is scraped from the websites of local presenters and venues. Comments?

Jefferson Hamer w/ Jonti Siman

Jefferson Hamer w/ Jonti Siman

Jefferson Hamer is a songwriter, guitarist, and traditional musician based in Brooklyn, NY. His personal influences include classic British folk icons such as Richard Thompson and Bert Jansch, golden-era songwriters in the Gordon Lightfoot vein, cosmic American country from Gram Parsons to the Grateful Dead, steely guitar twangsters, bluegrass harmony singers, and progressive innovators of Irish traditional music such as Planxty and the Bothy Band. Jefferson’s diverse musical background is borne out on many fruitful collaborations. With Hadestown creator  Anais Mitchell , he wrote and recorded  Child   Ballads,  an album of reimagined English folk songs which earned a BBC2 Folk Award and was named one of NPR’s top-ten Folk releases of the year. His duo with Dublin-born songwriter and traditional musician Eamon O’Leary,  The Murphy Beds , has toured extensively across the USA and Europe and performed with Glen Hansard, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and Sam Amidon.  He will be joined for this concert by acclaimed bassist Jonti Siman.  We are a little hard to find! Reuben and the Dark

Reuben and the Dark

un | love, the new album by Reuben and the Dark, is a collection of lush and beautiful songs about endings and hope for the future. Chronicling a tempestuous time in frontman Reuben Bullock's life, the album's eleven songs represent an exploration of life's crossroads, and the personal growth that comes from it. On the band's third album, Reuben and the Dark evokes the raw emotion of Bullock's soulful vocals with spacious sonics that suggest the levity that comes with the passage of a storm. un | love was produced by the band and Marcus Paquin (The National, Timber Timbre, Local Natives), who also takes up the mixing chair, as well as Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene.

*This show is partially seated.  Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.* For more than three decades now, Robin & Linda Williams have made it their mission to perform the music that they love, “a robust blend of bluegrass, folk, old-time and acoustic country that combines wryly observant lyrics with a wide-ranging melodicism.” Today some might call it “Americana,” but these two revered music masters were living and breathing this elixir 20 years before that label was turned into a radio format.

The Tarantellas

In a salute to Vito's Italian heritage, we are proud to present The Tarantellas as our dinner show on the first and third Saturdays of each month for a festive and loving tribute to "The Legendary Favorite Songs of Italy."  Bandleader/vocalist Richard Sclafani holds forth with his antique Neapolitan mandolin, a little work of art in itself, with a unique sound that has been described as the "heart and soul of Southern Italy".  On various nights, he is accompanied by special guests, including accordion virtuoso Bonnie Birch, acoustic guitarist Juan "Giovanni" Barco, and harmony vocalist Lana Brown. ...

Casey MacGill

Casey MacGill croons classic tunes in a style encompassing blues, ballads, and boogie. His piano weaves a spell of smoke-filled joints where little dramas played out to the sounds of tinkling keys. Casey is a native of Los Angeles and grew up with folk music, surf, 60's pop, and eventually the blues. He attended the Monterey Pop Festival, saw icons Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, blues artists Paul Butterfield, Junior Wells, Albert King, and the blues became the cornerstone of his musical style. He majored in music at Pasadena City College and Cal State LA, studying with jazz greats Gary Foster, Warne Marsh, and Buddy Collette. ...

Wes Ubaniak & The Mountain Folk w/ Kara Hesse & Jessica Eve

Urbaniak’s experimental expressionism puts fire to the gasoline structure of folk music. As his songwriting began to develop and his content deepen, he began pursuing the absolute dynamics of the solo musician in real time and continually reinvested what was being learned into his artistry. His songwriting can be thought of as a quilting of life lived, lessons learned, humility sought, and understanding earned through the processes of becoming a steady and thoughtful man. In support of that Mountain Folk music that Urbaniak plays, he has brought on some other stringed-talent to help develop the dynamic and the melodic themes for the stories that he delivers. ...

Elias Wonder at Frontier Home

Elias Wonder’s classic compositions create a sonic portal through which audiences are transported from the venue to a rollicking, joyful campfire-like experience. Rooted in folk and Americana song traditions, Elias Wonder enthusiastically sings melodies inspired by both the beauty of the natural world and the everyday struggles of being a human today. Debunking some of the common myths of our society, Elias Wonder’s music aims to evaporate illusions of separation and offer a hopeful, harmonious vision of the future. On any given night, Elias Wonder might play with a 5-piece, complete with upright bass, mandolin, and fluttering harmonies, or he might play solo, cooing songs into the night’s cool air. In the coming months, Elias Wonder will release a handful of singles in 2020 and look to play at local Seattle venues and music-friendly outposts in his beloved Columbia. https://eliaswonder.bandcamp.com 6:30 - Tacos, BYOB and Munchies 7:30 - Concert $20 per person or family suggested contribution; 100% to the musicians. **Important** Frontier Home is kind of hard to find! Ondara) and mixer-engineer Clay Blair to harness the energy and honesty of their live sound.
