Folk music concerts in Seattle, the Eastside and nearby areas. I am the host of "The Real Folk" on 91.3fm KBCS (Bellevue, Seattle, Tacoma) or streaming at KBCS.FM. The show airs every Sunday 6-8pm. You can listen to archived shows for up to two weeks after air date. The Real Folk is also available as a podcast from MixCloud. What is folk music? To me, it's acoustic music with an emphasis on traditional music, songwriting and storytelling, plus music from various cultures. Genres include contemporary singer/songwriter, bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, blues, roots, Americana, and more. This calendar is scraped from the websites of local presenters and venues. Calendar entries cannot be submitted directly, only by the presenters and venues themselves when they post them on their calendars. Some venues don't have online calendars, or have ones that are too difficult to scrape. I include as many as I can. Comments?

One of the most misunderstood figures in ancient mythology, Medusa was wrongfully punished and cast out for being the victim of a violent act, but is remembered solely for her frightful ugliness and lithifying gaze. Through their personal narratives of alienation due to racism, sexism, immigration, queerness, and disability, Medusa the band aims to retell this story by bringing back what has been cast out. Marta Solek and Saskia Tomkins resurrect the Suka, the Plock fidel, and the Nyckelharpa – forgotten folk fiddles with disreputable connotations that were rejected for centuries in their home countries of Poland and Sweden.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA It was not until after graduating high school and moving to Fremont, NE, to attend Midland University on scholarship for football that Tyler began to pursue his passion for music with vigor. After graduating, he relocated to Seattle, WA in the summer of 2017, where he currently resides and has been making impressive leaps and bounds in his songwriting, performing, and overall musical identity during his time in the PNW. His creative spin on past and present experiences breeds songs that lyrically offer a sensationalized window into his life. Tyler boasts powerful vocal performances that mix rich styles of Americana and Alternative Country music with Southern Rock and a fresh twist of soulful melodies. His music will have you singing along to a good time drinking song, reminiscing about long lost love and the regretful or questionable choices of your past, then leave you feeling uplifted, refreshed, and in an all around good mood.

Tret Fure is an award-winning singer songwriter whose music demonstrates a willingness to confront the most pressing issues of our day with courage, compassion and a deep sense of humanity. Her songs speak to the heart and the soul. Besides the broad themes of the songs themselves (addressing current social issues while also serving up some lovely love songs), her rich productions are creative with excellent guitar instrumentation and arrangements. Her latest album Lavender Moonshine is very much in that tradition: timely, compelling, provocative and tender.

Goldy & Foss are a singer-songwriter duo based in the Seattle area. They perform original music and tasty cover tunes across multiple genres. Catch any of their live performances and you'll find them moving seamlessly from Folk to Americana, to Blues, to Rock, to Latin ballads. Yet it all manages to sound cohesive - "strangely familiar" as one fan called it - and all part of the experience. Their original compositions have memorable melodies that stand on their own, yielding an unmistakably musical foundation for his quirky and compelling lyrics. Goldy & Foss deliver musical hooks, deft arrangements, and lush horn parts that provide a "just right" touch of color to support the emotional core of each song.

Known for their lockstep harmonies, incisive songwriting, and lush arrangements with “stylish, unexpected choices” (Acoustic Guitar), Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem has always been a standard-bearer among string bands who stretch the boundaries of American roots music. Arbo is “blessed with an unmistakable voice, both light and sultry, with a hint of tremolo and smoke” (Acoustic Guitar), and her singing and fiddling pulls from old-time, blues, and swing. Anand Nayak’s electric and acoustic guitar style mixes folk, blues, and rock; bassist Andrew Kinsey doubles on clawhammer banjo; and drummer Scott Kessel plays a homemade kit of wooden boxes, tin cans, caulk tubes, tambourines, and a vinyl suitcase. Arbo, Nayak and Kinsey all write songs, and the band covers gems from Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen, The Georgia Sea Island Singers, The Pretenders, and others, spinning performance sets that plumb the human condition with poetry, bravery, curiosity, and love.
